A leaked email from Chris Wharton, the chief executive of West Australian Newspapers has confirmed that 100 redundancies are to be made at the West Australian newspaper.

A challenging advertising market has been blamed

33 of the posts to go are said to be journalists’ roles.

The West Australian is one of the most significant newspapers serving Perth and Western Australia.

Seven West Media said in the email the redundancies were part of a cost-cutting restructure amid a challenging advertising market.

"Our changing industry and the current economic environment has presented many challenges for WA Newspapers over the past year,” the email said.

“These challenges make it imperative that we review our operations.

“The restructuring of the business means that a number of positions will become redundant. Wherever possible we will provide redeployment opportunities to affected employees. Unfortunately this cannot be achieved for everyone and some employees will end their employment with us."

ABC news reported that 110 jobs would be lost.
