Universal Sports chief executive David Sternberg has been named as the new head of media at Manchester United.

Sternberg joins the club with a brief to grow its social media output, currently Manchester United is one of the only leading European and Premier League clubs without an official Twitter account. Though there appears to be no immediate plans to launch on Twitter Manchester United’s Facebook page is currently one of the most visited sports’ sites in the world.

As well as handling social media Sternberg will be taking responsibility for Old Trafford’s in-house TV channel, MUTV, on top of the club’s website and mobile operations. The appointment will not affect the club’s director of communications, Phil Townsend.

Prior to joining Universal Sports in 2010 Sternberg spent 11 years at Fox Sports. The new role will see him based in both Old Trafford and Manchester United’s commercial headquarters in Mayfair; his first major contribution to the club will be during next month’s pre-season tour of the Far East and Australia.

Plans are already underway for the club to develop an official app, the appointment is the latest in a string of hires since the departure of manager Sir Alex Ferguson earlier this year marking a change in direction for the club.
