A new study of American couples between 2005 and 2012 has found that those who got together via online dating sites enjoy happier relationships and are less likely to break up, than those who met at the bar, workplace or on a blind date.

The research team found that of 19,131 respondents 35 per cent first met on the internet, 45 per cent of whom met on dating sites and 21 per cent on social networks.

Of the remainder 22 per cent met at work, 19 per cent through a friend, 11 per cent at school and 10 per cent via social gatherings.

Intriguingly the percentage of marital break-ups was just six per cent for those who met online, lower than any other group. They were also more satisfied with marital life but were at a loss to explain why this might be so.

The findings were produced by the University of Chicago, Harvard and Gestalt Research and were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
