Motorists in Adelaide have been surprised at the arrival of three smoking billboards placed by the Royal Automobile Association.

The billboards simulate smoke rising from a burning or overheating engine. The disruption smoke emission is timed to coincide with the traffic lights to ensure it draws maximum attention.

The billboard is “equipped with an environmentally friendly smoke machine, timed to the rotation of the traffic lights,” it was reported.

They are sited across the city, with one on Hindley and Morphett Street comprising a cut out extension, steam machine and messaging on an LED display.
