The launch of The Guardian digital edition in Australia brought an unexpected fringe benefit for Victoria’s Swan Hill Guardian, which received a proxy boost of 634% of traffic to its site in the wake of the launch.

Sophisticated search algorithms may not yet have elevated the international edition to the top of everyone’s search list within the first 24 hours of the internationally renowned title’s entry to Australia.

Swan Hill’s Guardian can be found on http://www.theguardian.com.au/, whilst the newly launched international entrant is currently on http://www.guardian.co.uk/australia, although it will switch to www.theguardian.com shortly.

Swan Hill’s Guardian received almost 6000 visitors on Monday, compared to its usual traffic average of 900.

“We’re having a bit of fun with it. It’s certainly different for us,” Swan Hill Guardian general manager Rob Duffield said.

“Our editor is away at the moment, he’s climbing a mountain in Asia, and he would be sorely sorry that he’s missed it all.”
