Chief executive and chairman of newspaper publisher Newsquest, Paul Davidson will retire later this year, according to reports.

Retirement: Davidson is expected to step down this year

A spokesman told the Daily Telegraph that Davidson was in the early stages of planning his retirement and US parent company Gannett had begun looking for a suitable replacement. Davidson became CEO in 2001 and later chairman after joining the company in 1998.

It was recently revealed that up to eight sub-editor posts could be cut at titles in Wales and Gloucestershire in favour of a centralised copy-editing hub in Newport, due to launch next month.

Journalists at the group are currently under a pay freeze and Newsquest in under pressure from the NUJ to end it.

The company publishes over 200 titles in the UK, including the Herald and Times group publications, the Northern Echo, the South Wales Guardian and the Penarth Times.
