A prominent Australian politician has publicly apologised after he inadvertently liked a Facebook photo of a friend, unaware that it was a 16 year old exposing himself in a ‘sneaky nuts’ prank.

Peter Collier, Western Australia’s minister for education, committed the faux pas whilst browsing the social media site and clicking the ‘like’ button on what he presumed to be an innocent photo of the teenager back in 2011.

It subsequently came to light however that the photographs subject was subtly displaying a portion of his anatomy that threw the minister into hot water.

In a statement Collier said: “At first glance it appeared to be a harmless picture. It was a silly mistake on my part. I only became aware of the actual content of the photo when shown by a journalist today. This obviously highlights the pitfalls of social media. I apologise if I caused any offence."

The practice was popularised in the country through comedian Chris Lilley’s Angry Boys programme in which a boy delights in sneakily exposing himself in the background of other people’s photos.

The incident only came to light last month when the teenager bragged on Twitter about the incident.
