Crimson Hexagon has analysed social media conversations to gauge public reaction to the announcement that David Beckham is to retire from football at the end of the season, and has discovered that 51 per cent of the conversation consisted of sharing news content.

Crimson Hexagon’s ForSight platform analysed 293,340 relevant Twitter and Facebook posts, finding that two per cent commented on his many haircuts, while one per cent of discussion pondered what he would do next: the same percentage as those who expressed disappointment about his retirement.

Just over a third (36 per cent) praised Beckham for all he has accomplished in the sport in the past two decades.

It has been predicted that Beckham could make as much as £300m in his retirement.
