Hacker leaks Sex and the City author’s new novel and emails
Candace Bushnell, author of the Sex and the City series, has fallen victim to a hacker after the first 50 pages of her new novel, along with a host of emails, were leaked online by a hacker named Guccifer.
After managing to break into Bushnell’s EarthLink email account the hacker was not only able to pilfer the draft opening but also eavesdrop on a fraught email exchange with her publisher as she desperately sought to have the content taken down.
To rub salt into the wounds Guccifer posted screenshots of the work and emails on Bushnell’s own Twitter account.
Not everyone believes the leak is bad news however with publishing consultant Jack Perry suggesting that the attack could be ‘great publicity’.
Perry said: “The pages are not edited nor approved for consumers. But her fans know that and will be thrilled to get a 'sneak peak'. This is great publicity for a book that isn't even written yet ... People will remember when the book comes out that is was the one that was hacked and released.
“The publisher can work to take it down and spend a lot of energy fighting this or they can embrace the chaos and go with it. Once it leaks, it will always be available. So why not work with it?"
