Argos has announced the appointment of Joanne Savage to the newly created role of head of own brand, as the company aims to become a digital retail leader.

Savage, who has previously held roles at Unilever and Nokia, said: "The Argos brand is a consumer favourite right across the UK and Republic of Ireland, and will get stronger as it grows as a digital retail leader.

"Innovating on own brands for Argos will be critical to its success, and will unlock a natural path for customers to buy a broader range of exclusive products from us more regularly. I'm delighted to join the business at such an exciting time and am already enjoying the challenge."

John Walden, managing director at Argos, said: "We are delighted to welcome Jo to Argos. Exclusive brands are a substantial part of our current business, and over our five year transformation, will become increasingly important. I am sure she will bring significant leadership and fresh thinking to this area."

Yesterday, research found that 65 per cent of consumers have increased the number of own brand products they buy.
