Sheryl Sandberg, the chief operating officer of Facebook, was revealed as the highest-paid executive at Facebook for the second year running after taking home $26.2m (£16.9m) in 2012.

However, her basic $321,128 in salary, a $276,730 bonus and around $25.6m in shares, brought her total to less than the $31m she earned in 2011.

Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook chief executive, meanwhile took $2m in compensation last year, considerably less than Sandberg’s, however much of Zuckerberg’s wealth is tied up in Facebook shares.

Zuckerberg gained $2.28bn in 2012 when he exercised a previously disclosed option to receive 60m in shares, according to a filing yesterday ahead of the group’s first-quarter results on Wednesday. He then sold about $1.1bn in Facebook shares to pay taxes on the options he exercised.

It has been predicted that Facebook will report a 36.1 per cent increase in revenues to £1.44bn and post-operating profit of $542.1m.
