WhatsApp has more users than Twitter, chief executive claims, while promising no ads
The chief executive of WhatsApp, Jan Koum, has suggested that the app is bigger than Twitter at the D: Dive Into Mobile conference.
Koum said that the company, which processes eight billion inbound messages and 12 billion outbound messages, has more users than Twitter.
He said: “We do have a manifesto opposing advertising. We’re proud of that. Who likes advertising?
“We’re bombarded with ads so much in our daily lives and we felt that smartphones aren’t the place for that. Our phones are so intimately connected to us, to our lives. Putting advertising on a device like that is a bad idea. You don’t want to be interrupted by ads when you’re chatting with your loved ones.”
It was rumoured that WhatsApp is in talks to be sold to Google for $1bn.
