Essence has announced the appointment of former Virgin Mobile founder Joe Steel as the company’s first chief operating officer.

Steel will be based in London and will be responsible for Essence’s global operation as well as developing the agency’s operating model.

He said: “I have a history of working with high-growth businesses with vibrant personalities and in my short time here so far, I’ve experienced exactly that at Essence.

“I’ve been brought in to develop the operating model while helping to continue the growth of the agency on a global scale and into new markets. One of my main roles is to ensure that as we continue to grow, we do this by keeping what separates Essence from our competitors – our culture and DNA. Having worked at the Virgin Group for many years, I fully understand how important cultural values are to the success of the business and Essence is in a strong position to make its people the driving force for future growth.”

Steel will look to drive Essence’s continued international expansion and, where businesses are acquired, manage their integration.
