Radio 1 may choose to snub playing Ding Dong the Witch is Dead during its rundown of the official Top 40 Chart following a campaign to get it to the number one position following the death of Lady Thatcher.

The song, which stems from the classic Hollywood musical The Wizard of Oz, is at the centre of a download campaign to ‘celebrate’ the death of the former Conservative Prime Minister who died earlier this week.

The song reached number 10 in the midweek download charts following a campaign set up on Facebook.

A spokesperson for Radio One said that it would make a decision on whether to play the song once the final positions were known.

"The Official Chart Show on Sunday is a historical and factual account of what the British public has been buying and we will make a decision about playing it when the final chart positions are clear,” said the spokesperson.

It has been speculated that the song may not even be played should it top the charts.
