The new Pope has more than doubled his Twitter feed in just a matter of weeks to over 5 million followers.

The Telegraph reports that since Pope Francis was elected in March, the @pontifex account has doubled its followers in the space of a few weeks.

The Twitter account was established by his predecessor Pope Benedict XVI in an effort to spread his message, but the account was reset when Pope Francis was elected.

Within minutes of being named Pope, his first tweet was sent, which read: ‘Habemus Papam Franciscum’, which translates as ‘We have Pope Francis’.

At the time of election, his English language Twitter account had 1,814, 852 followers, while he also has eight other Twitter accounts, with The Telegraph reporting that the Spanish-language account had risen to 1.6 million followers of the Argentinian.
