Martha Lane Fox, the government’s digital champion, is to join the House of Lords as a crossbench peer it has been announced.

Fox is one of the biggest names amongst a fresh intake of talent to the upper chamber which includes the composer and broadcaster Michael Berkeley.

Not aligned to any political party Fox was selected for the specialist knowledge she can bring to the house and form the third largest grouping in the chamber behind Labour and the Conservatives.

Fox currently advises the Cabinet on how they can harness the web to more effectively communicate with the population and was a founder of lastminute.com.
