Google, Facebook and Twitter have been told by the police that they must remove pictures purporting to show Jon Venables and Robert Thompson as they look today.

The pair, who killed James Bulger, were given new identities when they were released from jail in 2001, and those who post pictures claiming that they are of the two could be held in contempt.

This follows the announcement on Monday that the attorney general will pursue those who posted Jon Venables and Robert Thompson pictures on Twitter.

The attorney general’s office has asked that Google, Facebook and Twitter "assist with the removal of material in breach of the terms of the order".
