Mozilla has today unveiled its Firefox mobile operating system at the mobile World Congress in Barcelona, which it says will be “built entirely to open web standards”.

Mozilla has said that the Firefox OS will be available for free, and that it will be launched in emerging markets – such as Brazil, Colombia, Hungary and Mexico – before launching in developed marketplaces.

Gary Kovacks, Mozilla chief executive, said at the launch: “Our goal is to level the playing field and usher in an explosion of content and services that will meet the diverse needs of the next two billion people online.”

Alcatel, LG and ZTE are expected to incorporate Firefox OS later this year.
