With the news that Sony is set to reveal a PlayStation4 console later on this evening at a lavish New York launch event, data from Experian has found that UK internet searches for PlayStation4 have doubled in the last four weeks.

Data up until the week ending Saturday 16 February showed one in every 1500 UK searches contained the word ‘Sony’ however, only two per cent of PlayStation4 searches contained the word ‘Sony’ showing that PlayStation has become a brand in its own right in the eyes of consumers.

PlayStation4 was five times more popular last week than PlayStation3 according to UK searches.

Despite the hype surrounding the PlayStation4 launch Experian data shows there were 30 per more searches for the Xbox 720 last week than the PlayStation4.

Digital insight manager for Experian Marketing Services, James Murray, said the imminent launches of the PlayStation4 and Xbox 720 provide the games industry some much needed “rejuvenation after a pretty dire Christmas where only 8 per cent of product searches were for video games consoles or games”.

Murray adds: “The impending launch of the PlayStation4 and the Xbox 720 has got gamers excited again and the search data shows people are desperate for news and reviews with information about what we can expect from the next generation of gaming consoles. At the moment the Xbox 720 is the more popular of the two new consoles, but this is likely to change if Sony make a major announcement about the PS4.”
