Twitter has rolled out a time machine update to its mobile apps and website which allows users to dredge up old tweets using the search function.

Previously this functionality petered out beyond a week, with tweets penned before that lost amidst the morass of 140 character epithets consigned to the ether.

Twitter’s engineers have now finally found a technique to shine a light into this dark vault.

The new facility will be rolled out to users over the coming weeks but still only represent ‘a small percentage’ of the total tweets ever sent.

Instead Twitter assesses a basket of metrics from variety of engagement, favourites, retweets and clicks to determine what should be brought to the surface and what is best left untouched.
