LinkedIn zooms past 200 million in 200 countries: Will the ads follow?

LinkedIn has passed the 200 million mark in users, the professional network announced yesterday.

They even told us where they live: 74 million are in the United States, 18 million live in India, 11 million are in the UK and Brazil, 7 million are Canadian.

In the U.S., 55 per cent of total users - or 41 million - visited LinkedIn.com during December 2012, according to comScore.

"Marketers who are budgeting for LinkedIn ads will likely want to take note," said Adweek, describing progress as "eyecatching". "It hit 100 million users in March 2011 and was only at 32 million four years ago. It will be worth watching to see if more brands take to advertising on the site during 2013."

Right now most of the company's revenue stems from recruitment and HR-related products .

In the Q3 earnings report, revenue from marketing products totaled $64 million, up 60 per cent compared to the third quarter of 2011.

Growth is fastest in Turkey, Colombia and Indonesia. Mobile usage is particularly impressive in China, Brazil, Portugal and Italy.

Senior vice-president Deep Nishar,in a company blog celebrating the 200 million, said , "With representation in more than 200 countries and territories. We serve our members in 19 languages around the world.

"It’s been amazing to see how our members have been able to transform their professional lives through LinkedIn."

He told the story of Akshay Chaturvedi from New Delhi, India who was able to use LinkedIn as a launch pad for his career.

"Not only was he able to lead an international project at AIESEC for a project on AIDS right out of university, with the help of LinkedIn, he was recruited by KPMG and continues to receive career guidance from his LinkedIn network."
