The number of apps downloaded worldwide hit 1.76 billion in the final week of 2012, according to research from Flurry.

The report, which spans iOS and Android devices, revealed 17.4 million apps were activated on Christmas day, with 328 million apps downloaded on the same day.

Over 50 million iOS and Android devices were activated during the week between 25 December and 31 December, while 1.76 billion apps were downloaded – up 65 per cent from the weeks leading up to the final week.

The UK saw the third highest number of downloads, with 132 million downloads during the week, behind the US which led with 604 million and China with 183 downloads.

Download numbers then saw a sharp drop with Germany the fourth highest with 57 million.

Flurry expects the trend of one-billion-download weeks to continue into 2013 and has forecast the industry will surpass the two-billion download mark in the fourth quarter, accelerated by mobile developments from Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon and Microsoft.
