WhatsApp, YouTube, Paper and Room named the top apps of 2012

Apple has revealed the top apps of 2012 as well as the iPhone maker’s favourites.

Messaging app WhatsApp was the best-selling app of the year on iPhone whilst Apple’s Pages word processor was the best-selling iPad app.

To free apps included Google’s YouTube app, on the iPhone, and video calling service Skype’s app on the iPad.

The best apps nominated by Apple editors were also revealed, with notepad and sketching application Paper named the iPad app of the year followed by Green Kitchen - a recipe app for vegetarians.

Puzzle game Room, was the iPad game of the year while Rayman Jungle Run, a platform game, was iPhone game of the year.

Travel service Airbnb’s app was the the travel app of the year, with taxi app Hailo as runner-up.
