The Scottish Government has promoted Clare Smith, its current head of PR and international marketing manager, to the role of chief marketing officer.

Smith, who has worked within the communications and marketing team at the Scottish Government for nearly five years, moves into the position on an interim basis initially, following the departure of Gillian Govan earlier this year.

Govan stepped down as chief marketing officer in October to open her own consultancy.

Smith told The Drum: “After three very rewarding years heading up the PR and international marketing team here at the Scottish Government, I’m very excited to be taking on the challenge of stepping into the role of Chief Marketing Officer.

“Gillian leaves behind her some very big Prada shoes to fill, however she also leaves a fantastically talented team and some exceptionally strong campaigns, both of which I can’t wait to work closer with.”

At the time of writing, how the communications team would be structured following Smith's promotion was unclear.
