Ibrox Stadium to be renamed ‘Sports Direct Arena’?

Rangers FC have played at Ibrox stadium since 1899.Rangers FC have played at Ibrox stadium since 1899.

Rangers FC are believed to be in negotiations with Sports Direct and Newcastle United FC owner Mike Ashley over the rights to rename Ibrox Stadium.

The proposed deal, claims the Scotsman, would see Ibrox become the Sports Direct Arena.

A statement released by Rangers owner Charles Green suggests he is open to the idea of rebranding Ibrox for the “commercial benefit” the cash-strapped Scottish club.

Rangers fans, however, fiercely proud of the stadium’s 113 year history, seem likely to resist any attempt to rename their home ground.

The move comes a month after Newcastle United FC’s ground – renamed as Sports Direct Arena in 2011 – reverted back to its historic name of St. James’ Park, following a backlash from fans.

Rangers fans won't like this one bit. So much has happened in recent times to diminish the Rangers brand. The club being liquidated and breaking their 140 year history was a hard pill for the fans to swallow. The renaming of Ibrox however is a step too far. The Newcastle fans weren't happy with this so expect the Rangers supporters to be even more unhappy. What next, renaming the team? Changing the colours? I don't think so.

I don't think you need to ask us the fans, but if it goes ahead and becomes Sports direct arena,it will be an empty sports arena, not much use without fans!!!.

Ibrox, or at least parts of it, is a listed building. The law means it is of historical significance and you cannot tamper with it. The law therefore needs to be amended to prevent tampering with the stadium name too.
