A mobile wallet pilot for O2 has begun in partnership with contactless mobile technology company 2ergo at Dublin’s ‘Silicon Docklands’ area.

The pilot ‘Docklands Deals’ scheme will offer customers, using any mobile network, the opportunity to redeem local discounts and promotions through their iPhone and Android handsets within over 50 local participating retailers through the 2ergo developed app.

The smartphone will be used by the customer to connect to a specially installed ‘podifi pod’ that is installed within the retailer’s till. This will record the transaction and measure the performance of the promotional campaign.

Eugene Mitchell, marketing and innovation director at Telefónica Ireland, described the pilot as a “fantastic example” of O2 using technology partners to integrated the use of mobile within consumer’s everyday lives.

“It also marks another step along the journey of making the mobile wallet a reality with mobile loyalty cards and payments to follow,” he added.

2ergo CEO Neale Graham also praised the scheme, stating that the use of mobile coupons, loyalty and payment schemes were “a real growth opportunity.”
