Lord McAlpine’s lawyers have revealed that they are looking at twenty ‘high profile’ tweeters who named the former Conservative party treasurer on Twitter, although it was said that this number could increase.

Sally Bercow, wife of the House of Commons Speaker; Guardian columnist George Monbiot and comedian Alan Davies are amongst those who a spokesperson confirmed are being pursued.

Yesterday, it was suggested that those with fewer than 500 Twitter followers would not be seen as ‘high profile’.

Bercow has deleted her Twitter account since her tweet which said "Why is Lord McAlpine trending? *innocent face*".

Monbiot has apologised for his tweet, which read "I looked up Lord McAlpine on t'internet. It says the strangest things."

Davies retweeted a tweet which wrongly named McAlpine as the child abuser from claims made in Newsnight.
