US Television networks declared President Obama re-elected at 4.18 a.m. UK time today as he reached a total of 290 delegates in the presidential election - well over the 270 needed to claim victory. Later the total grew to to 303.

Romney delays concession to Obama

But Republican contender Mitt Romney , at his "victory" party in Boston, delayed conceding to the president.

This was because the Ohio result which took Obama over the magic figure looked like a 49% each tie. The networks awarded the state to Obama on the basis of their projections and exit polls.

Florida where the figures were also close to a tie had not been called by the networks at 6am UK time.

Later sources told CNN that Romney had called Obama to tell him he would "soon" give a concession speech.
