Tumblr, the micro blog famous for its GIF animation antics has surpassed the psychologically important 20 billion page views per month figure.

The stratospheric stats perch the social media site within the top 20 most visited websites in the US and come just one month after the site reported attracting 13 billion page views.

An exponentially increasing smartphone market is credited with Tumblr’s success with the site now drawing 77m posts per day across 79m individual blogs.

David Karp, who founded Tumblr in 2007, said: “This started pretty modestly as something I wanted for myself. I remember very vividly that moment where I was like, it wouldn’t be much more work to add a column to the database that [asked] which user posted this post and maybe make it something other people can use.”

Despite attaining these heady heights Tumblr still has a way to go to catch the market leader, Facebook currently draws an impressive 1 trillion page views a month.
