The BBC is now investigating around 20 members of staff as its investigation into the alleged sexual abuse of children by its former star presenter, Jimmy Savile, continues to grow.

Law firm Slater and Gordon now says it is representing 36 people who claim to have been abused by the disgraced presenter, with a further seven also thought to be bringing legal action via another firm, Pannone.

They are all pursuing claims against numerous institutions whom they believe have failed them, notably the BBC, Leeds General Infirmary, Stoke Mandeville and Broadmoor Hospitals and Savile’s estate.

A BBC spokesman confirmed that “all new allegations are passed to the BBC Investigations Unit or to the police as appropriate.”
