American broadcaster NBC has had its websites hacked in the run-up to Guy Fawkes Night by a group (or individual) calling themselves ‘Pyknic’.

NBC portals affected included Saturday Night Live, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and even affected their homepage for a few hours on Sunday night, amidst claims that a number of usernames and passwords had been stolen in the process.

Also hit was NBC’s video page which was replaced by a looping audio clip intoning: "Remember, remember the fifth of November, the gunpowder treason and plot. I know of no reason why the gunpowder treason should ever be forgot."

The annual celebration has been seconded by hacking groups, notably Anonymous, and the Occupy movement to symbolise subversive interests following its representation in a cinematic retelling of Alan Moore's V for Vendetta comic book in 2005.
