A man has been arrested in relation to the theft of two Olympic medals after his picture was put on Twitter.

Alex Partridge, a rower, and Hannah Macleod, a hockey player, had been in a London nightclub after they celebrated with the Queen at a special reception in Buckingham Palace.

As the two left they realised that their medals, as well as Partridge’s Olympic blazer, had been stolen.

The pair both took to Twitter in an effort to find the medals. Macleod, 28, who won bronze in the women’s hockey, wrote: “My medal was also stolen at the same time. Totally devastated.”

“I’m not after punishment. If you picked up a Bronze Olympic medal that isn’t yours pls just send anonymously back to GB hockey-Bisham Abbey.”

Partridge, who also won bronze as part of the men’s eight rowing team, posted: “To the chap who took my @London2012 Olympic Blazer & Medal last night The police have u on CCTV Please return it to 6 Lower Mall Hammersmith.”

A link to a picture of a dark-haired man smartly dressed in a white shirt and pale tie and holding a drink beneath a straw canopy was also posted beside the question “does anyone know this man?”

Within 12 hours, Macleod’s message had been re-tweeted more than 17,000 times.

Scotland Yard recently confirmed a man had been arrested in connection with the inquiry and was being questioned at a west London police station.

Partridge’s blazer was handed in to a police station at 11.30am today, but there has been no further information on wither Macleod or Partridge have recovered their medals.
