The Metrolople Orchestra is set to use Twitter to try to save itself in a campaign by Havas Worldwide Amsterdam and Perfect Fools.

The campaign asks participants to compose their music and listen to other musical tweets in order to create a ‘Tweetphony’, a symphony of compositions crafted entirely of tweets based on the letters associated with music notes.

Once a composition is finished, users can tweet it and a link will be produced. People clicking on this link will go to the website and will be able to listen to the tune on a bespoke player.

Peter Hamelinck, creative director of Havas Worldwide Amsterdam, said: “The Metropole is one of the leading lights in the neo-classical landscape. They are a stalwart of Dutch culture and need to be listened to. Merging the digital world with the real allows them to connect with a far greater audience, bolstering its profile within the media and the public at large, while simultaneously making it an enjoyable and interactive experience for those who connect with them.”

The most interesting and best tweets will be played by the orchestra at the ‘Tweetphony,’ held at Studio 1 of the MCO in Hilversum on Friday 26 October 2012.

Mark Chalmers, creative partner at Perfect Fools, said: “This is an intense and exciting production marrying technology, music and social to a live stream. Havas Worldwide Amsterdam continue to push creativity raising awareness to the plight of The Metropole and this is the right digital real combination to make a difference.”

Peter Hunfeld, horn player at the Metropole Orchestra, added: “The Metropole is seen as one of the best orchestras in the world, but because of budget cuts on public broadcasting we are now threatened with extinction. And unfortunately, the minister responsible is full of empty promises. The orchestra must keep playing. This is the message we want to send to the Dutch public and its politicians. With this innovative interface and user experience, the entire country can let the Metropole Orchestra play via social media."
