Twitter has revealed that it has blocked German members from viewing tweets from neo-Nazi group Besseres Hannover, which has been outlawed by the country.

According to a letter by the Hanover police: “It [the party] is disbanded, its assets are seized and all its accounts in social networks have to be closed immediately.

“I ask you to close this account immediately and not to open any substitute accounts for the organisation ‘Besseres Hannover’.”

Alex Macgillivray, chief lawyer at Twitter, said in a tweet: “We announced the ability to withhold content back in Jan. We're using it now for the first time re: a group deemed illegal in Germany.”
