Nike has terminated its sponsorship contract with Lance Armstrong on the basis of "seemingly insurmountable evidence" that he participated in doping and "misled" the company for more than a decade.

The statement on Nike's website today comes just six days after the sportswear giant said it would "continue to support" the disgraced cyclist.

Today Nike said: "Due to the seemingly insurmountable evidence that Lance Armstrong participated in doping and misled Nike for more than a decade, it is with great sadness that we have terminated our contract with him. Nike does not condone the use of illegal performance enhancing drugs in any manner.

"Nike plans to continue support of the Livestrong initiatives created to unite, inspire and empower people affected by cancer."

Earlier today Armstrong announced that he was standing down as chairman of his Livestrong charity so that the focus could return to its fundraising efforts.
