Although the press invites have not gone out yet, multiple sources now say that Apple will announce the new iPad Mini at a San Francisco event on October 23. Earlier the date was thought to be October 17.

The iPad mini: easy to read a book?

Also, the device is being described as a "7.85-inch iPad " slightly larger than earlier predictions.

Topeka Capital analyst Brian White, who said he saw the device during a trip to component suppliers in Asia, has described the device as comparable to Google's Nexus 7 and Amazon's Kindle Fire.

"We actually had the opportunity to play with a pilot iPad Mini used by one of the vendors," White said. "This 7.85-inch iPad Mini fit our hands like a glove and we were easily able to tuck the device in our sport coat, offering consumers a more mobile iPad experience."

The device is expected to be priced between $299 and $349. Google's Nexus 7 and Amazon's Kindle Fire HD, are expected to be sold at cost, which would make them cheaper.

The Mini's display is rumoured to have with a resolution comparable to non-Retina iPhones.

One weekend report said the product launch on October 23 will focus on Apple's iBooks, which may be a key to the Mini's costumer appeal. The date is only three days before Microsoft is expected to launch its new Surface tablet.
