The PC market is set to contract for the first time in over a decade, with sales falling by 1.2 per cent this year according to research.

Research by IHS iSuppli has suggested that the market will see sales fall from 353m last year to 349m in 2012, just a week before Microsoft releases its heavily touted new operating system Windows 8, which will work across PC and tablet devices.

The reason for the decline is partially due to the rise in tablet sales, it has been suggested.

Craig Stice, senior principle analyst for IHS, commented; "There was great hope through the first half [of the year] that 2012 would prove to be a rebound year for the PC market. Optimism has vanished and turned to doubt, and the industry is now training its sights on 2013 to deliver the hoped-for rebound."
