Rugby League World Cup 2013 (RLWC2013) has appointed McCann Manchester to handle its sports marketing.

The agency was appointed following its role as marketing services provider to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Mark Foster, RLWC2013 marketing manager, said: “RLWC2013 is the country’s next major international tournament and we are determined to make it the best Rugby League World Cup ever.

“McCann laid out an insightful strategy, coupled with great ideas, all underpinned by a tremendous track record working in sports marketing. We are looking forward to working with them to create awareness that RLWC2013 is the next global sporting event to be held in the UK and thereby drive ticket sales.”

McCann Manchester will focus specifically on helping RLWC2013 sell 500,000 tickets for the tournament, which begins at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on 26 October 2013.

Kevin McKay, McCann Manchester sports marketing director, added: “We are delighted to have secured this prestigious brief which highlights our expertise in promoting large scale international sporting events.

“The spirit of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be carried on by RLWC2013 and this is a truly great opportunity for the whole nation to get a ticket and watch the next international sporting event in the UK.”
