Beevolve, the social media analytics platform, has unveiled new data into the average Twitter user finding that of the 36 million Twitter users involved in the study, 53 per cent were female.

Women led the way in users with protected accounts, with only 36 per cent of men using the settings, and are more active on the site posting an average of 610 tweets compared to 567 from men. And when they tweet, family is the top topic for women whilst men tweet most about technology.

According to the study, the 15- 25 age category accounts for 73.7 per cent. 26-35’s came in second with 14 per cent of the distribution share, the 46-55 age category has the lowest proportion of users.

The study also looked at who users follow and who is following them. Over 80 per cent of Twitter users have under 50 followers, with 9.2 per cent having between 101 -500 and 6.3 per cent having 51-100.

These figures reflect the proportions of how many accounts a user follows. 74 per cent follow under 50, 14 per cent follow between 101- 500 and 8 per cent follow 51 – 100 accounts.

The study also found that even though Android has more market share than iOS globally, almost two-thirds, 68 per cent of Smartphone/Tablet users use Apple devices to access twitter. The Apple numbers does not include the Mac OS based devices.
