Ashley Cole has been charged by the Football Association following his well-publicised Twitter comment last week.

Doubts over the evidence he gave in the John Terry racial abuse case prompted him to take to the social media site, calling the FA ‘a bunch of twats.’

The charge of misconduct is believed to have led to a substantial fine, estimated at two week’s pay or £240,000, the highest ever in football for a social media offence.

The FA said in a statement on their website: "Chelsea FC's Ashley Cole has been charged by The FA in relation to a Twitter comment which was improper and/or brought the game into disrepute."

The Chelsea left-back has been given until 4pm on Thursday to respond to the charge, however thus far it doesn’t appear he has learnt his Twitter lesson after he retweeted a comment ridiculing England striker Alan Shearer last night.

Cole’s retweet read: “Alan Shearer says @TheRealAC3 needs to be banned for comments. I want his opinion on bans for kicking Neil Lennon in the head. #GlassHouses."

Last week Shearer called for the FA to ban Cole after his ‘twat-tweet’ outburst, saying: "I think the FA can put a big statement out here by actually not fining him but actually banning him on Friday against San Marino.''
