The Local Business Accelerators campaign has been launched with Dragon’s Den star and businesswoman Deborah Meaden getting involved as this year’s expert mentor.

The Local Business Accelerators initiative was initially launched in 2011 to highlight how local and regional newspapers can help businesses to achieve their growth objectives. Since then over 500 titles have signed up to the initiative which has also received backing from David Cameron and Sir Mervyn King.

Businesses that want to get involved must be at least one year old and have been set up within the past five years with the business deemed most promising receiving free advertising in its local newspaper, which will be designed by a London ad agency.

The business will also receive mentoring from Deborah Meaden who commented: “With last year’s LBA having demonstrated the unique power of local and regional press to provide a meaningful boost to promising young businesses, I am delighted to be supporting the initiative once again.

“The campaign provided tangible examples of the real contribution that local newspapers can provide to young businesses across many different sectors, accelerating their development.

“Enterprise and entrepreneurism in the local community is more important than ever before and I look forward to finding another young business to mentor and drive forward.”
