New York City Police have attempted to explain an upsurge of theft in the city to the the growing popularity of Apple products such as iPods, iPhones and iPad’s.

The resulting iCrime wave has seen 13,222 Apple products stolen over the first nine months of the year, compared with just 86 ten years ago.

This has contributed to an overall rise of 4% in recorded crime for NYC this year, reaching 81,756.

Ray Kelly, NY’s police commissioner, said: “In the absence of the Apple thefts, we would be experiencing a decline.”

Kelly also stated that his department was attempting to infiltrate gangs using social media websites, saying: “Officers can adopt aliases for their online work, as long as these are registered with the department. They can also protect their anonymity by using department laptops with untraceable internet cards.

“By capitalising on the irresistible urge of these suspects to brag about their murderous exploits on Facebook, detectives used social media to draw a virtual map of their criminal activity over the last three years.”
