Imperial College London has launched new websites, designed by Make it Clear and built by Make it Digital, for its major research centres based at the university.

The new sites will replace the existing web facilities for faculty, students and academics and are designed to bring together a comprehensive collection of materials from across the various research departments.

The MRC-HPA: Centre for Environment & Health and SAHSU (Small Area Health Statistic Unit) departments websites are the first of several Imperial College sites to be developed by the agency.

Designed on a customisable template, the sites allow the related functions of each research centre to be shared without compromising the requirements of the individual websites. This enables more cost effective customisation and creation for each of the initial websites to be delivered, the framework and high-end CMS will remain the same throughout.

The sites have created a central location for access to over 800 bio-medical papers published by the two research units, and tie-in news, events and featured research making it the first point of call for academics. They will also serve as a portal to a single integrated forum for staff, enabling simpler intra and inter-departmental communications.

File sharing is also enabled to allow colleagues to access data quickly and easily within staff pages. Based on the open source Drupal 7 CMS, the content on the sites is easily manageable and improved database support, accessibility and flexible content options are built in to the back end.
