News international has strongly denied allegations put forward at a high court hearing that all major stories reported by the News of the World were a result of phone hacking.

Hugh Tomlinson QC, counsel for the individuals seeking damages for the alleged phone hacking, said internal communication from inside News International suggested this might be the case.

He said: "If we have a document, as we do, in the bundle where an individual writing to another individual [says] 'everyone knows that all significant stories over a two-year period were obtained by phone hacking', that does matter."

Dinah Rose QC, News International’s counsel said the document did not say that, and warned Tomlinson to be careful what he said in open court.
