Facebook has launched a gift service, currently only available in some US cities, which allows users to buy real gifts for friends.

Users will be able to purchase gifts such as cuddly toys, Starbucks vouchers and clothes, with the gifts to be linked to birthday and event reminders.

The new gift service will be available on Android mobile devices and on the mobile web as well as desktop computers, and is expected to come to Apple iOS devices next month.

Facebook will take a cut of the cost of the gift – some of which are rumoured to cost several hundred dollars – deals on deals with suppliers.

According to the Telegraph, users will be able to exchange or swap received gifts for a different colour or size.
