French magazine Closer has handed over its original image files of a topless Duchess of Cambridge to the Royal Family at the bequest of a French court.

The mag was ordered to hand over all forms of the controversial files in its possession within 24 hours – under pain of a hefty £8k daily fine thereafter.

Such moves have failed to prevent further publication of the revealing snaps however which have already been widely disseminated, the latest outlet being Swedish mag Se och Hoer which ran a three page spread of 11 pics, one of which showed Kate removing her bikini bottoms.

An effort is underway to unmask the photographer behind the images but the confidentiality of journalistic sources is strictly protected by French law.

The Duchess has just completed a nine day tour of the South Pacific, jetting into Brisbane for three hours to catch a connecting flight back to Britain – and another media frenzy.
