Billy Connolly has been signed up as an ambassador for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The Glaswegian comedian's first duty is to narrate a special animated film telling the story behind the Glasgow 2014 mascot, which will be unveiled at a launch event on Thursday.

'The Big Yin', whose tones can already be heard in cinemas worldwide as the voice of King Fergus in Brave, joins athletes Sir Chris Hoy and Rebecca Adlington as games ambassadors.

“I know that the people of Glasgow will enjoy the Games immensely, the whole of Scotland will," Connolly said.

"We are a nation that welcomes all visitors with a smiling face, the goodwill of Scots will stand forever, we will always have that.”

The organising committee hope that the celebrity endorsement will help it recruit the 15,000 volunteers it needs to stage the games.

"We love taking part in everything and for something as big as the Commonwealth Games, people will be coming out in their droves to spectate and volunteer," Connolly said.
