Guardian Media Group has appointed FremantleMedia's Oliver Rawlins as group director of communications.

Rawlins will have responsibility for GMG's public affairs activities and will oversee the Guardian's press office and internal communications when he takes up the post on 26 November.

He replaces Chris Wade who has left GMG to join WPP as head of communications for EMEA.

At FremantleMedia, the content and distribution arm of European broadcast giant RTL Group, Rawlins was the vice president of global communications and led a team responsible for the company's corporate, consumer and internal comms.

He previously held senior communications roles at BBC Worldwide, Weber Shandwick and the UK Film Council, where he managed the global PR campaign for The King's Speech.

Andrew Miller, the Guardian Media Group CEO, said: "He has extensive experience working within the media industry, both agency and in-house, possesses a deep understanding of the critical role played by communications in organisations undergoing transformational change, and, importantly, understands GMG's unique purpose and structure.”
