The UK’s first 4G network, a faster standard for mobile connectivity, has been launched this morning by Everything Everywhere, the new umbrella brand for the owners of Orange and T-Mobile.

It promises to usher in a new era of high speed mobile downloads, allowing 4G equipped smartphones and tablets to stream video content whilst on the move.

Existing 3G connections stutter at around 5MPS but 4G has delivered speeds in excess of 20MPS since its debut in the United States.

As their name suggests Everything Everywhere are confident of the appeal of the new system, promising nationwide availability within a year and significant coverage in major British cities by the end of 2012.

Only the very latest smartphones will come with 4G capability, notably Nokias Lumia 920’s and, likely, Apple’s iPhone 5.

Rival firms have expressed outrage that Everything Everywhere has been allowed to gain a headstart on rivals – operating an effective monopoly until 2013 when Three is expected to launch its own 4G service.
