Speculation is mounting that the new iPhone – due to be unveiled on Wednesday – will include a fingerprint scanner, following Apple’s move to purchase fingerprint security firm AuthenTec.

According to a Daily Mail report, the new feature will create an extra layer of security on future iPhones by preventing anyone from accessing messages and data without the correct fingerprint authorisation.

It is believed that fingerprint scanner could be housed behind the screen, requiring an authorised thumbprint to unlock the phone, or could be appear as a sensor on the back of the device.

Although AuthenTec is not scheduled to decide on Apple’s $365m (£228m) acquisition bid until 4 October, it is known that the security firm has already been developing 2D fingerprint sensors for Apple.

The tech giant is also expected to unveil its new PassBook service, which will allow users to store shop coupons, loyalty cards and other items such as airport boarding passes, with the release of its latest operating software iOS6 this autumn.

AuthenTec executive Art Stewart commented recently: 'The real sweet spot for today's smart sensor is the NFC (near field communications) enabled smartphone, where the smart sensor not only strengthens security but greatly increases the speed and convenience of mobile payment transactions.”
